Participant observation refers to a variety of strategies in data gathering in which the researcher observes a Group by participating, to varying degrees, in the activities of the group.
Other /More definition:

Participant Observation refers to a form of systematic observation whereby the observer interacts with the people being observed, but tries not to alter the situation in any way.
