Phonemes
Phonemes refer to the smallest units of sound in spoken language that make a difference in the meaning of words. When added together, phonemes create syllables, which allows the creation of words; for instance, "ox" is made up of three phonemes: /aa/, /k/, and /s/ (English contains 44 phonemes).
