Useful and useless side of life is a term associated with Adlerian individual psychology which states that the individuals who operate on the "useful side of life" cooperate with the community, at once advancing themselves and the community toward an improved adaptation, as opposed to those on the "useless side of life" who operate in ways that are obstructive of or antithetical to the interests and well-being of the community.
