Metacognition means thinking or awareness of one's own thoughts; awareness and knowledge of and control of one's cognitive abilities, and thoughts as shown by the intentional use of cognitive strategies in solving problems and the factors that influence thinking.

Metacognition, moreover is the person's understanding and control of his/her cognition ; human's ability to think about and control their own processes of thought and ways of enhancing their thinking; higher order cognitive ability that enables an individual to examine and analyze the manner in which he or she thinks, solves problems, encodes and retrieves information, and performs cognitive operations.
